Comments on the Running Boom-

The third running boom continues to progress as major races have added events and continued to increase in size, and new races were added to the already filled yearly racing schedule.  With Frank Shorter’s marathon victory at the 1972 Olympic Games, the sport began to grow in prominence around the country.  This growth reached Michigan in the late 1970’s and continued into the early 1980’s.  It was a time before the digital age, and races needed experienced officials to organize and manually time races to ensure accurate results.  In the mid-1990’s, a second resurgence occurred, and now, with the advent of advanced technology and lessons learned from the pioneers of the sport, the 21st century is experiencing a third running boom.  In the late 1970’s and early 80’s, women represented less than 10% of the field.  Now its 50%- an important factor in the size of many race fields.  The Motor City Striders, the oldest club in the state, have played a major role in helping the sport reach this position today.  Beginning in 1959 and continuing through 2004, the club averaged a race every other week.  At one time, the largest field for every distance raced in Michigan was  a Strider event.  The club downsized in 2005, and since that time, has been pleased to see that events the club started and played an important role in have continued to be major events on the running scene.
