21st ANNUAL FIRECRACKER MILE

Firecracker
Mile Early in the week, David Kimeli, winner of the 2002
Firecracker Mile, called his younger brother Shadrack in
Lansing
and told him he should enter
Clawson
’s race this year. Shadrack,
a native of
Kenya
who has been in this country since 2000, took his brother’s
advice. He brought his
sister Lidia with him and proceeded to win the 21st
Annual Firecracker Mile in 4:18.9, running into a wind that
generally slowed times by six seconds or more.
Staying just off the lead for most of the event, he burst
past Jeremy Hurley of Wyoming, Michigan, with 100 meters to go to
take top honors. Hurley
took second in 4:22.5.
The
women’s competition was not as tight, as Denise Neish, of Shelby
Twp., had a comfortable 18-second lead over second place finisher
Lisa Groat, of Woodhaven, in 5:13.2 to 5:31.5 respectively.
Last week, Neish set the mile record in the
Motor
City
Striders Summer Road Race Series.
