Runners Frolic in Ferndale Nearly ideal
running conditions pleased runners and officials alike at the 18th
Annual Ferndale Foot Frolic.
Defending mile champion Jon Walters won the mile in 4:57. A
week earlier, in the Berkley Mile,
he had also successfully defended his title. For the woment,
two 12 -year-olds battled it out for the top spot, with Claire
Boone, of Toronto, Ontario, leading the way to the finish in 6:29.
In the 10K, Billy Jack, of Royal Oak, led the pack
in 35:26. A week earlier he had finished sixth at the Berkley
10K in 37:07. Todd Kelly, of Troy, led the Masters field
for the second year in a row in 36:42.
Swift competitors over the age of 60 showed they
could still hold their own against any age competition, as
61-year-old James Carleton, of White Lake, finished 11th overall in
38:43 and 68-year-old Brian Harris, of Royal Oak, finished five
places behind him in 39:58.
The female competitors were led by Marbeth Reader,
of West Bloomfield, in 41:36. Nancy Cassel, of Northville, was the
top Master, finishing second place overall in 42:21.
