Berkley Days Race organizers were pleased that the
heavy rain that pelted the area during the night stopped as the day
dawned for the 26th Annual Berkley
Days races. In the mile, Jim Walters of Huntington Woods
took top honors for the second year in a row with a 4:41 clocking
that was 37 seconds faster than his 2003 victory. Donna Olsen
of Canton led a small women's field in 6:30.
In the 10K, Belfast, Ireland native, Turbough Donnelly, led the
field from start to finish and enjoyed a comfortable 1:36 lead over
the second place finisher. In the US for just 3 weeks of a 2
month stay for Schrader Electronics, Donnelly is here doing contract
work for General Motors. The women's winner, Kathy Rink of
Clarkston, also was comfortable in her winning role as she
outdistanced the second place finisher by nearly two minutes.
Kathy also won the newest mom award, having delivered just 3 months
ago.
Special recognition went to Bill Moyer of Berkley, who is the
only individual to have run all 26 of these races. He did this
one the hard way. On Saturday, the day before this event,
Moyer competed in a 50 mile run in LaGrange, Wisconsin.
Because of the heat, it took him over 9 hours to complete the
distance. After that race, he drove back and was ready for the
Berkley 10K.
